Undo 運動 / Experimental films by Maki Satake & Keitaro Oshima

Curated by Fernando Moure and Peter Conrad Beyer

Selected short films by artistas Maki Satake and Keitaro Oshima, will be shown in the Traumathek Köln on Friday 29.04.2016. Undo [Japanese: Movement] is a compilation of analogue and digitally produced works and captivates through the tension between reality and fiction, retro and contemporary mood, formalism and poetic narratives. By the way, Undo 運動, in Japanese language, describes movement in the sense of physical activity, which could also be reflected in the works: Satake's camera makes her physical movement palpable in the act of filming and, although abstract, the objects in Oshima's film collages are almost tangible and in permanent motion.

Maki Satake is dedicated thematically to subjects like identity and memory. She involves herself and her family in her work, using familiar, even intimate spaces as a set. The material for her cinematic collages are photographs and film that interweaves her through the ages into dizzying visual movements. Satake works primarily with atmospheric sound and dispenses with explanatory words. In this way, her mostly documentary-autobiographical contexts communicate exclusively through her imagery.

The mostly silent abstract films of Keitaro Oshima explore illusion and the perception of reality. The cinematic collages from found footage and overpainted 16 mm celluloid reflect elements of the avant-garde film. Each scene breaks down into individual spatial layers that repeat, turn around, rewind and rewind, or simply stand still. Mostly without sound, he puts the viewer in a purely visual field, where it is about reading his photographic compositions and visual-musical rhythms. Oshima cleverly uses the sound of the cinematographic space, which suggests to the recipient an apparent silence.

Both film artists will be present.
